Chapter Thirteen

I STOOD IN THE UPSTAIRS hallway of Candace’s house. It was about two in the morning and Joseph had left me momentarily to let his sister know we’d be crashing in her spare bedrooms. I waited in the dark, careful not to make a sound. But inwardly, I was squealing and reeling from the most magnificent date I’d ever been on. I could hardly stop smiling.

As I heard Joseph come up the staircase, I wiped the crazy, giddy-girl grin off my face. I wanted to end the night on a good note, not a scary one. I rocked back on my heels in nervousness and pretended I was calm and poised. If he could hear my heart, he’d know I was a sprightly mess on the inside.

“Okay, Candace is cool with it,” he whispered. His hands automatically reached out and clasped my elbows. “Would you like something more comfortable to sleep in? One of my shirts, maybe?”

The man could’ve offered me chain mail. As long as it was his, I was willing to sleep in anything. “Thanks, that’d be nice.”

“Give me a sec.” He disappeared into the room beside me. I heard a drawer open and close, and his footsteps coming back to me. “Here you go. See if this’ll fit. It’s my lucky shirt.”

It’s my lucky shirt now. “I’m sure it’ll fit just fine.” I held the soft cotton jersey with reverence and imagined how great it would be to sleep in it, second only to sleeping with Joseph.

He pointed to the rooms across the hall from each other. “You can sleep in there, and I’ll sleep in here.” I barely had time to peek inside my room before he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close. “There’s extra blankets in the closet, if you get cold.”

I liked how he seemed to worry over me. “I’ll be fine.”

“Okay. Well, I guess this is goodnight.”

I nodded and bit my lip, hating for this night to end.

“Sleep well, Sutherland.” He pressed his lips to mine, smiled, and pulled away. We caught and held each other’s hand, neither of us wanting to let go. I watched him back up into his room with reluctance, our arms extending far enough to keep our fingers locked. Once our fingertip grasp broke, we entered our separate rooms. I clung to my door, not wanting to close it. He left his open and all I wanted to do was follow him. I yearned to kiss him again and feel his hands on me. He had the best touch of any man I’d ever known and it was all I could do to separate myself from him.

I heard him rustle in the darkness and I saw his coat land on the floor at the foot of his bed, then his shirt. I heard boots tumble. Two seconds later, I heard the quick rip of his zipper and the swish of denim as he yanked them from his legs and tossed them on the pile.

I swallowed hard at the thought of Joseph in his boxers—or maybe briefs.
